Grief can be such a difficult and challenging journey. It brings up not only the loss of a loved one or the loss of something, but it also can bring up old wounds that haven’t been healed and processed.

After my own grief experiences, I’ve learned that grief has been a breaking open experience rather than broken experience. Being broken means something is wrong with me, I’m damaged. Being broken open means that a space is being made for something coming towards me. That something is healing: acknowledgement of all our heart and the wounds waiting to be healed, a new frontier, a new way of being, living, and see the world from a different perspective.

Grief comes to teach us how to embrace this being human. It beckons us to feel the immensity of that humanity, to break open and step through the new portal that is waiting for us. It doesn’t mean we forget about our loved ones, but to invite them on the journey with us. The legacy, gifts, and lessons they left behind moves with us as we move forward. When I walk forward, I know I walk not alone but with the full support of my ancestors behind me.
